Classic Crochet Granny Squares

Materials

• Worsted weight yarn in cream
• Crochet hook size H/8 (5.0mm)
• Yarn needle
• Scissors

Gauge

4 rounds = 4 inches square

Abbreviations

• ch: chain
• sl st: slip stitch
• sc: single crochet
• dc: double crochet
• sp: space
• rep: repeat

Instructions

Round 1:

1. Ch 4, sl st to first ch to form a ring.
2. Ch 3 (counts as a dc), 2 dc into ring, ch 2, *3 dc into ring, ch 2; rep from * two more times. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. (Four 3-dc clusters)

Round 2:

1. Sl st into next dc and into ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp (corner created).
2. Ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp (corner created), ch 1; rep from * two more times.
3. Join with sl st to top of ch 3.

Round 3:

1. Sl st into next dc and into ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp. Ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1.
2. *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; rep from * two more times.
3. Join with sl st to top of ch 3.

Round 4:

1. Sl st into next dc and into ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp. Ch 1, 3 dc in each of next ch-1 sp across to next corner, ch 1.
2. *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in each of next ch-1 sp across to next corner, ch 1; rep from * two more times.
3. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. Fasten off and weave in ends.
