Painted Desert Cuff Stocking: A Free Beginner-Friendly Knitting Pattern

Introduction

Welcome to the Painted Desert Cuff Stocking, a plush, desert-boho heirloom that looks far more complicated than it actually is. This stocking is perfect for anyone who has mastered the very basics of knitting and is ready to try something a little more special, like a simple cable and a classic heel. The finished piece is a classic stocking shape with a straight leg, an angled heel, and a gently curved foot, all knit in soft, matte recycled cotton. The main body is a calm, solid mauve in smooth stockinette, while the deep plum cuff and toe carry a beautiful wavy cable panel that looks like ripples in desert sand. The result is a soft, dry, slightly rustic fabric that feels wonderful in your hands and looks stunning hanging by the fire.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Worsted-weight recycled cotton yarn. You will need 1 skein (approx. 220 yd / 200 m) in Mauve (MC) and 1 skein (approx. 220 yd / 200 m) in Plum (CC). The sample uses a smooth, matte recycled cotton with a soft, dry hand.
  • Needles: US 7 (4.5 mm) 16" circular needle and a set of 4 double-pointed needles (or a long circular needle if you prefer the magic loop method).
  • Cable needle: US 7 (4.5 mm) cable needle (or any small spare needle).
  • Stitch markers: At least 3, to mark the beginning of the round and the edges of the cable panel.
  • Tapestry needle: A blunt needle with a large eye for weaving in ends.
  • Scissors: Sharp scissors for cutting yarn.
  • Stitch holder: One, to hold the cable panel stitches while you work the heel.

Finished size: Length from cuff to toe approx. 17" (43 cm). Circumference at leg approx. 12" (30.5 cm), relaxed. Foot length from heel to toe approx. 9" (23 cm). Cuff circumference approx. 12" (30.5 cm).

Gauge

18 sts and 24 rnds = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, worked in the round, blocked. Cable panel gauge: the 24-stitch Wavy Cable Panel measures approx. 4.5" (11.5 cm) wide.

Why gauge matters: Gauge is how many stitches and rows you get in a set measurement. If your gauge is different from the pattern, your stocking will come out too big or too small. How to make a gauge swatch: Cast on about 30 stitches with your main yarn and needles, knit in stockinette (knit one row, purl one row) for about 5 inches, then bind off. Lay the swatch flat, block it lightly, and measure 4 inches across the middle. Count how many stitches fit in those 4 inches. If you have more than 18, your stitches are too small, so try a larger needle. If you have fewer than 18, try a smaller needle.

Beginner Tips Before You Start

  • Use stitch markers to track the cable panel. Place a marker on each side of the 24 cable stitches so you always know exactly where the panel begins and ends.
  • Do not pull your yarn too tight. Keep your tension relaxed, especially when working cables, so the fabric stays soft and stretchy.
  • Count your stitches at the end of every round. It is much easier to fix a mistake right away than to find it many rounds later.
  • Read the whole cable panel once before you begin. The wavy cable is just knit and purl stitches with two simple cable crosses, so it is easier than it looks.
  • Try on the leg as you go. Slip the stitches onto scrap yarn or a long circular needle to check the fit before you start the heel.

Next rnd: K2tog around. (8 sts)

Break yarn, leaving a 6" tail. Thread the tail through the remaining 8 sts, pull tight, and secure on the inside.

Assembly and Finishing

Weave in ends: Thread each yarn tail onto the tapestry needle and weave it through the back of several stitches on the inside of the stocking, changing direction once or twice so it cannot work loose. Trim the excess yarn close to the fabric.

Close any gaps: If you see a small hole at the corners of the heel or where you picked up stitches, use a short length of matching yarn and the tapestry needle to sew it closed from the inside.

Blocking: Soak the stocking in cool water for about 15 minutes, then gently squeeze out the water without wringing. Roll it in a towel to remove more moisture. Lay it flat on a towel or blocking mat and pin it to the finished measurements, pinning the cable panel flat so the waves show clearly. Do not over-stretch the cuff. Let it dry completely, which usually takes 24 hours.

Final touch: Fold the cuff down if you like, and add a small loop of yarn at the top back corner if you want to hang the stocking.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Change the colors: Try a cream main color with a rust contrast for a warmer desert palette, or a deep teal cuff for a cool, modern look.
  • Adjust the size: To make a larger stocking, add stitches in multiples of 4 to the stockinette sections and work a few extra rounds in the leg and foot. To make a smaller one, remove stitches in multiples of 4 and shorten the leg.
  • Substitute the yarn: Any worsted-weight yarn will work, but choose one with a smooth, matte finish so the cable panel shows clearly. Always knit a gauge swatch first.
  • Add a hanging loop: Knit a small 6-stitch i-cord about 4" long and sew it to the inside back of the cuff for an easy way to hang your stocking.
