Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton (100% mercerized cotton; 100g/186 yds) in 2 colors:
    • Color A (Natural) - 2 skeins
    • Color B (Terracotta) - 1 skein
  • Hook: Size H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Gauge: 14 sc x 16 rows = 4 inches (10 cm)
  • Other: Scissors, tapestry needle for weaving ends

Step-by-Step Instructions

Notes & Abbreviations

Notes: The bag is worked in two main pieces: the base and the body. The body uses a combination of single crochet and chain spaces to create a woven effect. The macrame fringe is added at the end.

Abbreviations: ch = chain, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet, sl st = slip stitch, st(s) = stitch(es), rep = repeat, sk = skip

Base (make 2)

With Color A, ch 26.

  • Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (25 sc)
  • Row 2-12: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (25 sc)

Fasten off. Repeat for second piece.

Body

With Color A, ch 76. Join with sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist.

  • Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around. Join with sl st to first sc. (76 sc)
  • Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, *ch 3, sk 3 sts, sc in next st; rep from * around, ending with ch 3, sk 3 sts, sl st to first sc. (19 ch-3 spaces)
  • Round 3: Sl st into first ch-3 space, ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in same space, *ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-3 space; rep from * around, ending with ch 1, sl st to first sc.
  • Round 4: Sl st into first ch-3 space, ch 1, sc in same space, *ch 3, sc in next ch-3 space; rep from * around, ending with ch 3, sl st to first sc.
  • Rounds 5-20: Rep Rounds 3 and 4. Fasten off.

Assembly

Place the two base pieces together with wrong sides facing. Using Color A and working through both layers, sc around the edge of the base, working 1 sc in each row-end and 1 sc in each corner st. Join with sl st. Fasten off.

Attach the body to the base: With Color A, sc around the top edge of the base and the bottom edge of the body, matching sts. Join with sl st. Fasten off.

Straps (make 2)

With Color B, ch 100.

  • Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (99 sc)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew one end of each strap to the inside of the bag, about 4 inches from the center front and back.

Macrame Fringe

Cut 40 strands of Color B, each 12 inches long. Fold each strand in half. Insert the folded end through a ch-3 space on the bottom of the bag, then pull the ends through the loop. Tighten. Repeat around the entire bottom edge of the bag.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Trim fringe evenly.
