Free Pattern: Leafy Butter Crochet Beanie for Small Dogs

Introduction

If you have never held a crochet hook before, this is the perfect first project to fall in love with. The Leafy Butter Beanie is a tiny, cozy hat made for small dogs, and it is built almost entirely from two simple stitches that even total beginners can master in minutes. The finished hat is soft and squishy, with a bumpy butter-yellow puff-stitch body, a smooth folded white brim, and a single rust-colored autumn leaf tucked onto the side like a little mountain-cabin keepsake. It looks absolutely charming on crisp fall walks, and because it is small, you will finish it in just a few evenings. Let's make something adorable together.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn (body and brim): Worsted weight yarn (CYC category 4) — approximately 90 yards of butter yellow and 40 yards of white. Acrylic is recommended for easy washing and durability.
  • Yarn (leaf): A small amount (about 10 yards) of worsted weight yarn in rust or amber.
  • Main hook: Size H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook for the hat.
  • Leaf hook: Size G/6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook for the leaf appliqué.
  • Stitch marker (or a scrap of contrasting yarn) to mark the first stitch of each round.
  • Tapestry needle (also called a yarn needle — a large needle with a blunt tip and a big eye) for sewing the leaf and weaving in ends.
  • Scissors for cutting yarn.
  • Straight pins (optional but helpful) to hold the leaf in place while sewing.

Finished size: Fits small dogs with a head circumference of 10–12 inches (25–30 cm). The finished hat measures approximately 11 inches (28 cm) around unstretched and 5 inches (13 cm) tall. The leaf is about 2 inches (5 cm) long.

Abbreviations and Beginner Glossary

Every pattern uses short codes to save space. Here is every single one used in this pattern, explained as if you have never crocheted before.

  • ch – chain. Make a loop of yarn on your hook, then pull the yarn through that loop. Each loop you pull through is one chain.
  • sl st – slip stitch. Insert your hook into the stitch, wrap yarn over the hook, and pull it through both the stitch and the loop on your hook at the same time. It makes a nearly invisible joining stitch.
  • sc – single crochet. Insert hook into stitch, wrap yarn over hook, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), wrap yarn over again, pull through both loops. One single crochet made.
  • hdc – half double crochet. Wrap yarn over hook first, insert into stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), wrap yarn over, pull through all 3 loops at once.
  • dc – double crochet. Wrap yarn over hook, insert into stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), wrap yarn over and pull through 2 loops, wrap yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops.
  • puff – puff stitch. (Wrap yarn over hook, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop) three times — you will have 7 loops on your hook. Wrap yarn over and pull through all 7 loops at once, then ch 1 to close the puff. This creates one bumpy cluster.
  • sc2tog – single crochet 2 together (a decrease). Insert hook into first stitch, pull up a loop, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), wrap yarn over and pull through all 3 loops. Two stitches become one.
  • st / sts – stitch / stitches.
  • rnd – round. One complete circle of work in a circular project.
  • magic ring – an adjustable loop of yarn you crochet into, then pull tight to close the center hole.
  • ch-1 sp – chain-1 space. The little gap under the single chain that closes each puff stitch.
  • [ ] – brackets mean "repeat everything inside the brackets" the number of times stated after them.

Gauge

Gauge: 4 puff stitches and 4 rounds = 2 inches (5 cm) using the 5.0 mm hook.

Gauge simply means how big your stitches turn out. If your stitches are too loose, the hat will be too big and slide off your dog's head; if they are too tight, it will be too small to fit. To check, crochet a small practice swatch of the puff-stitch body (about 12 stitches wide and 6 rounds tall), lay it flat, and measure 2 inches across and 2 inches up. Count how many puff stitches and rounds fit in that space. If you have more than 4, your stitches are tight — try a larger hook. If you have fewer than 4, your stitches are loose — try a smaller hook. Always make a swatch before starting; it takes ten minutes and saves hours.

Beginner Tips Before You Start

  • Mark your first stitch. This hat is worked in continuous rounds, meaning you spiral upward without joining. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round so you never lose your place.
  • Do not pull the yarn too tight. Beginners tend to choke the hook. Keep your tension relaxed so the puff stitches stay puffy and the hat stays stretchy enough to pull over your dog's ears.
  • Skip the chain-1 spaces. Each puff is followed by a ch 1, and on the next round you work into that ch-1 space, not into the puff itself. This is the most common beginner mistake.
  • Count your puffs every round. You should always have 24 puff stitches. If you have 23 or 25, fix it before moving on.
  • Keep your magic ring tail long. Leave a 4-inch tail at the start so you can pull the center hole completely closed at the end.
  • Try the hat on your dog as you go. After Round 16, slip it on gently. It should feel snug but not tight.

Rnd 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 1 (this does not count as a stitch). Work 6 sc into the ring. Pull the ring closed. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st] around. (18 sc)

Rnd 4: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] around. (24 sc)

Rnd 5: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] around. (30 sc)

Rnd 6: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 sts] around. (36 sc)

Rnd 7: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 5 sts] around. (42 sc)

Part 5: Leaf Stem (rust/amber, 4.0 mm hook)

Stem: With rust yarn, ch 6. Sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (5 sl sts)

Fasten off, leaving a short tail. Sew the stem to the narrow base of the leaf.

Assembly and Finishing

Step 1 — Weave in ends. Thread each loose yarn tail onto the tapestry needle and weave it back and forth through the inside of the hat for about an inch, then trim. Leave the leaf's 10-inch sewing tail free.

Step 2 — Fold the brim. Fold the white brim up against the puff body so the white band sits on the outside of the yellow. With white yarn and the tapestry needle, tack the brim to the hat at 4 evenly spaced points around the base. Take a small stitch through both layers at each point only — do not sew through to the inside of the hat, or it will pucker.

Step 3 — Place the leaf. Position the leaf appliqué on the side of the hat, overlapping the white brim and the lower puff body. Pin it in place if you like.

Step 4 — Sew the leaf. Using the leaf's tail and the tapestry needle, sew the leaf to the hat with small, invisible stitches around its edge. Secure the stem with a few extra stitches.

Step 5 — Final ends. Weave in the remaining ends.

Step 6 — Block. Gently steam-block the hat and leaf to settle the puff stitches. Hold a steam iron an inch above the fabric (never press it flat) and let the steam relax the stitches, then reshape with your hands and let it dry completely.

Care: Hand wash cold, reshape, and lay flat to dry.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Change the colors. Swap the butter yellow for cream, sage green, or dusty rose, and change the leaf to deep burgundy for a different season. Keep the white brim for that crisp folded look.
  • Adjust the size. For a slightly larger dog, add one more increase round to the crown (Rnd 9: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 7 sts] around = 54 sc) and work one extra puff round. For a tinier dog, stop the crown at Rnd 7 (42 sc) and work 21 puffs per round.
  • Substitute the yarn. A soft cotton or cotton-blend worsted works beautifully and is easy to wash. Just check your gauge again, since cotton behaves differently from acrylic.
  • Make it a set. Crochet a second leaf in a contrasting color and sew it to the opposite side, or add a tiny crocheted acorn for extra autumn charm.
