Crochet Cross with Tassel

Materials

  • Cotton crochet thread size 10 in white and yellow
  • Crochet hook size 1.75 mm
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Gauge

Gauge is not crucial for this project.

Abbreviations

  • ch - chain
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • sc - single crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • tr - treble crochet

Instructions

Center Piece

  1. With white thread, ch 4 and join with a sl st to form a ring.
  2. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st to top of ch-3. (12 dc)

Arms of the Cross

  1. Work as follows from the 2nd round: start at one of the dc of previous round, *ch 3, 1 tr, ch 3, sl st in same st,* repeat from * to make the 4 arms of the cross. Ensure each arm is even.

First Border

  1. Switch to yellow thread.
  2. Round 2: *Ch 1, sc in each dc and tr from previous round, ch 3, sl st to join,* repeat around each arm. This creates a picot edge.

Second Border

  1. Still with yellow, work sc around each arm in each ch-space and dc, sl st each junction. Be careful to keep the work flat.

Tassel

  1. Cut several strands of yellow thread, around 4 inches each. Fold in half and attach to the bottom of the cross using a lark's head knot.

Finishing

  • Weave in any loose ends with the yarn needle.
  • Block lightly if needed for shaping.
