Crochet Whimsical Unicorn Hooded Cowl with Flowers Free Pattern

Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight yarn in cream, purple, pink, blue, and gold
  • Crochet hook size H/5.0 mm
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Wooden button, 1.5 inches in diameter

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • tr = treble crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch

Gauge:

12 dc and 8 rows = 4 inches

Instructions:

Hooded Cowl:

  1. With cream yarn, ch 60. Join with a sl st to form a ring.
  2. Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in each ch around, join with sl st to top of ch-2. (60 dc)
  3. Rounds 2-10: Ch 2, dc in each dc around, join with sl st. Fasten off.

Hood:

  1. Attach cream yarn to any dc on the cowl's top edge.
  2. Row 1: Ch 2, dc in next 29 sts. Turn. (30 dc)
  3. Rows 2-20: Ch 2, dc in every dc across. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
  4. Fold hood in half and use the tail to sew the top seam.

Edging:

  1. Attach purple yarn to any st on the cowl bottom.
  2. Round 1: Ch 1, sc around the entire edge, join with sl st. Fasten off.

Unicorn Horn:

  1. With gold yarn, ch 2.
  2. Round 1: 6 sc in the second ch from hook. (6 sc)
  3. Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)
  4. Round 3: Sc in each st around.
  5. Round 4: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around. (18 sc)
  6. Rounds 5-10: Sc in each st around. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
  7. Stuff lightly and sew to the top front center of the hood.

Unicorn Ears (Make 2):

  1. With cream yarn, ch 8.
  2. Row 1: Sc in the second ch from hook and across. Turn. (7 sc)
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog. Turn. (5 sc)
  4. Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next st, sc2tog. Turn. (3 sc)
  5. Row 4: Ch 1, sc3tog. Fasten off.
  6. With purple yarn, sc around the edges. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
  7. Attach ears to each side of the horn.

Flowers:

For each flower, use purple, pink, or blue yarn.

  1. Ch 34.
  2. Row 1: Sc in the second ch from hook and across. (33 sc)
  3. Row 2: Ch 3, tr 5 times in first sc, sl st in next sc, (tr 5 times in next sc, sl st in next sc) across. Fasten off.
  4. Roll into flower shape and sew securely.
  5. Attach flowers around the horn as desired.

Finishing Touches:

  • Sew the button onto the edge of the cowl. Use the buttonhole between the stiches on the opposite side to fasten.
