Materials Needed:
- Worsted weight cotton yarn (approx. 150 yards)
- Crochet hook size I (5.5 mm)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Stitch marker (optional)
Gauge:
- 12 stitches x 10 rows = 4 inches in ribbed stitch
Abbreviations:
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- dc: double crochet
Instructions:
Begin with the Base
- Start by making a magic ring.
- Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 11 dc in the ring. Join with sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (12 dc)
Build the Rows
- Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in the same stitch, 2 dc in each stitch around. Join with sl st. (24 dc)
- Round 3: Ch 1, sc in the same stitch, sc in the next st, *ch 1, skip 1, sc in the next 2 sts* repeat around. Join with sl st.
- Round 4: Ch 3, dc in same stitch, *skip next 1, 2 dc in next* repeat around. Join with sl st.
- Round 5: Repeat Round 3.
- Continue this pattern of alternating rounds of sc and dc until you reach 8 inches in diameter.
Create the Double Thickness
- Once your square is large enough, fold it in half with the right sides together.
- Using your hook, slip stitch around the edges, sealing only three sides. Leave one side open for turning.
- Turn the potholder right side out and stuff with another layer of cotton or fabric to create the double thickness.
- Slip stitch the open edge closed.
Add the Hanging Loop
- Ch 12, sl st to the top corner of the potholder to create a loop.
Finishing Touches
- Weave in any loose ends with a yarn needle.
- Your rustic textured ribbed potholder is ready to use!
Enjoy your new creation in your kitchen or gift it to a friend!
