Crochet Delightfully Textured Coaster Set
Materials Needed:
- Worsted weight cotton yarn (about 100 yards, any color)
- Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
Exact gauge isn’t crucial for this project, but aim for about 4 stitches per inch in double crochet.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- sp = space
Pattern Instructions:
Base Coaster:
- Make a magic ring.
- Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 11 dc in the ring. Join with a sl st to the top of ch 3. (12 dc)
- Round 2: Ch 3, dc in the same st, 2 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st. (24 dc)
- Round 3: Ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st. (36 dc)
- Round 4: Ch 3, dc in the same st, *dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st. (48 dc)
- Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, *ch 2, skip 2 st, sc in next st; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st. (16 sp)
- Round 6: Ch 3, 2 dc in each ch 2 sp around. Join with a sl st. Finish off. Weave in ends.
Textured Variations (4 total):
- Variation 1: (Stripes) Change yarn color every two rounds for a striped effect.
- Variation 2: (Shells) Replace Round 6 with a shell stitch: *5 dc in next ch 2 sp; repeat from * around.
- Variation 3: (Popcorn) Replace Round 6 with popcorn stitches: In each ch 2 sp, make 5 dc, remove hook and pull through the first dc.
- Variation 4: (Picot Edging) Add a picot around the edge by chaining 3, slip stitching into the same st, then slip stitch to the next.
Finishing:
Once you have your coasters finished, place them on a flat surface and use a steam iron to shape them gently if needed.
