Instructions
1. Casting On
Using your first color (e.g., red), CO 56 stitches using the long tail method onto one of the double-pointed needles. Distribute the stitches evenly across 3 needles (18 stitches on each of 2 needles, 20 stitches on 1 needle) and join to work in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
2. Knitting the Cuff
Work in 1x1 ribbing (K1, P1) for 1.5 inches (approx. 12 rows).
3. Knitting the Leg
Change to stockinette stitch (knit every round) and continue knitting until the leg measures 5 inches from the cast-on edge. You can change colors every 1-2 inches to create stripes. Here’s a suggested stripe sequence:
- Red for 1 inch
- Green for 1 inch
- Blue for 1 inch
- Yellow for 1 inch
- Purple for 1 inch
- Repeat this sequence until you reach 5 inches.
4. Shaping the Heel
To shape the heel, you will turn your work:
- Work on the first 28 stitches (the first needle). K14, then P14 (you will now be working flat for the heel)
- Continue back and forth on these stitches for the heel:
- Row 1: K14, turn.
- Row 2: P14, turn.
- Repeat until you have completed a total of 14 rows. End with a knit row.
5. Putting the Heel Together
Now, you will create the heel flap:
- Pick up 14 stitches along each side of the heel (totaling 28 stitches).
- Returning to working in the round, knit across the tops of these stitches while picking up the remaining 28 stitches from the second and third needles, as before.
6. Knitting the Foot
Continue in stockinette stitch, changing colors as desired, until the foot is 2 inches shorter than desired length. Typically, aim for around 7 inches from the heel.
7. Shaping the Toe
To shape the toe, you will again decrease:
- Round 1: Knit 25 stitches, K2tog, knit to end.
- Round 2: Knit every stitch.
- Repeat these two rounds until you have 12 stitches left.
- K2tog around until 6 stitches remain.
8. Finishing the Socks
Cut the yarn leaving a long tail. Thread this through the remaining stitches and pull tight. Weave in all ends using the tapestry needle.
Conclusion
Block your socks gently and wear them with pride! Enjoy your colorful creation and the warmth they bring!
