Materials

• Worsted weight yarn in a solid or variegated color
• US Size 8 (5mm) knitting needles
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in pattern stitch

Abbreviations

• k: knit
• p: purl
• sl: slip stitch as if to purl with yarn in back

Instructions

1. Cast on 30 stitches.
2. Row 1: *k1, sl 1; repeat from * to end of row.
3. Row 2: Purl all stitches.
4. Row 3: *sl 1, k1; repeat from * to end of row.
5. Row 4: Purl all stitches.
6. Repeat Rows 1-4 until the piece measures approximately 8 inches or desired length.
7. Bind off all stitches and weave in ends using the tapestry needle.

Finishing

Block the square by soaking in lukewarm water, then pinning it to size on a flat surface until dry.
