Rustic Fair Isle Cardigan
This cardigan features a beautiful Fair Isle design around the yoke and is knitted in soft yarn, making it a comfortable and stylish addition to your wardrobe.
Materials
- Yarn: 4 skeins of burgundy (Main Color - MC) and 2 skeins of white (Contrast Color - CC)
- Needles: US size 8 (5 mm) circular needles (32” cable for body, 16” for sleeves)

- Buttons: 7 wooden buttons (0.75” diameter)
Gauge
20 stitches and 28 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
Abbreviations
- CO = Cast On
- K = Knit
- P = Purl
- St(s) = Stitch(es)
- K2tog = Knit two stitches together
- RS = Right Side
- WS = Wrong Side
- MC = Main Color
- CC = Contrast Color
Instructions
Body
- CO 100 stitches using MC.
- Join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist stitches.
- Work in stockinette stitch (knit every round) until the piece measures 15 inches from the cast on edge.
- Begin Fair Isle pattern as follows:
- Round 1: (K8, K2tog) repeat to end.
- Round 2: K all stitches.
- Round 3: (K7, K2tog) repeat to end.
- Continue this pattern, decreasing by 1 stitch every round until 80 stitches remain.
- Switch to CC for the next 4 rounds.
Yoke
Sleeves
- CO 50 stitches for left sleeve using MC.
- Join to knit in the round.
- Work in stockinette stitch until the sleeve measures 20 inches.
- Decrease 1 stitch every 5 rounds until 40 stitches remain.
- Repeat for the right sleeve.
Finishing
- Block the cardigan lightly to shape.
- Attach buttons evenly along the front opening.
