Nordic Snowflake Crochet Table Runner

Introduction

If you have ever admired the clean, calm look of Scandinavian winter decorating, this table runner is your chance to make it yourself — even if you have never held a crochet hook before. It is a long, flat rectangle of creamy off-white single crochet, with crisp navy snowflake bands near each short end and a soft fringe at both tips. The finished piece measures about 14 inches wide and 60 inches long, so it drapes beautifully down a dining table, a sideboard, or the back of a sofa. Because it is worked flat in rows of single crochet — the simplest stitch there is — the whole project is just one stitch repeated over and over, with a little color play in two short sections. The fabric comes out dense, slightly ridged, and wonderfully sturdy, the kind of heirloom-feeling textile that makes a room feel cozy the moment you set it down. Best of all, it is perfect for a first big project: forgiving, repetitive, and genuinely useful when it is done.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn (main color, MC): Worsted weight (#4) cotton or cotton-blend yarn, approximately 420 yd (384 m) of cream/off-white. The sample used Paintbox Cotton Aran (100% cotton, 50 g / 85 yd) — 5 balls cream.
  • Yarn (contrast color, CC): Same yarn, approximately 130 yd (119 m) of navy — 2 balls navy.
  • Crochet hook: Size G-6 (4.0 mm), or whatever size gives you the gauge below.
  • Stitch markers: At least 4 (to mark your edges and the start of each snowflake band).
  • Tapestry needle: A blunt-tipped needle with a large eye, for weaving in ends.
  • Scissors: Sharp, for cutting yarn and trimming fringe.
  • Optional: A ruler or tape measure, and a towel-covered board or blocking mats for finishing.
  • Finished size: Approximately 14 in (35.5 cm) wide x 60 in (152 cm) long, not counting the 2 in (5 cm) fringe at each short end.

Abbreviations and Beginner Glossary

Every term used in this pattern is explained here. If you are brand new, read this list twice before you begin — it will make the instructions feel like plain English.

  • ch – chain. Make a slip knot on your hook, wrap the yarn over the hook, and pull it through the loop on your hook. That is one chain. A row of chains is your starting "foundation."
  • sc – single crochet. Insert your hook into the next stitch, wrap the yarn over the hook, pull up a loop (you now have 2 loops on the hook), wrap the yarn over again, and pull through both loops. One single crochet made.
  • st / sts – stitch / stitches. One completed single crochet is one stitch.
  • RS – right side. The "public" side of the fabric that will face up on your table.
  • WS – wrong side. The back of the fabric, which will face down.
  • MC – main color (cream/off-white here).
  • CC – contrast color (navy here).
  • turn – at the end of a row, flip your work over like turning a page in a book so you can work back across the row you just made.
  • fasten off – cut the yarn a few inches from your work, pull the tail all the way through the last loop, and tighten so it does not unravel.
  • tapestry crochet – a colorwork method where you carry the unused color along behind your stitches and crochet over it, so the fabric stays flat and tidy with no loose floats on the front.
  • gauge – how many stitches and rows fit in a set measurement (see the next section).
  • blocking – gently dampening and pinning the finished piece to its final size so it dries flat and even.

Gauge

16 sc x 18 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in single crochet, unblocked.

Gauge matters because it is the only way to know your runner will come out the size you expect. If your stitches are bigger than the sample's, the runner will be wider and longer; if smaller, it will shrink. To check, crochet a small practice square about 6 in (15 cm) wide in single crochet, lay it flat, and measure 4 in across the middle. Count how many stitches fit in those 4 inches and how many rows fit in 4 inches vertically. If you have more than 16 stitches, your tension is tight — try a larger hook. If you have fewer, your tension is loose — try a smaller hook. Do not skip this step; it takes ten minutes and saves hours.

Beginner Tips Before You Start

  • Count every row. The stitch count never changes: every single row of this runner is 56 sc. If you ever count 55 or 57, undo back to the last correct row. A stitch marker clipped into the first and last stitch of a row makes counting instant.
  • Keep your tension relaxed. Do not pull the yarn tight after each stitch. Single crochet should feel smooth and even, not stiff. Tight tension makes the runner narrow and hard to block.
  • Always chain 1 at the start of a row. This little chain gives your edge height. It does not count as a stitch, so your first single crochet goes into the very first stitch of the previous row.
  • Change color on the last yarn-over. When a navy stitch is coming, work the stitch before it in cream but pull the navy through on the final yarn-over. This keeps the color change crisp and avoids a "dot" of the wrong color.
  • Keep carried yarn loose. In the snowflake bands, the unused color rides behind your work. Let it lie flat and slightly loose — if you pull it tight, the runner will pucker and narrow.
  • Mark your bands. Place a stitch marker at the start of Row 5 and Row 231 so you always know exactly where the snowflake sections begin.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Notes

The runner is worked flat in rows, turning at the end of every row, in single crochet. Colorwork is tapestry crochet: carry the unused color along the wrong side and crochet over it. Each chart square equals 1 sc. Read right-side (odd) rows right to left; read wrong-side (even) rows left to right. Stitch count stays constant at 56 sc throughout. Width check: 56 sc ÷ 4 sc per inch = 14 in wide. Length check: 270 rows ÷ 4.5 rows per inch = 60 in long.

Setup

With MC, ch 57.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (56 sc) Turn.

Rows 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (56 sc) — this makes a 4-row cream border at the first end.

Snowflake Band 1 (Rows 5–40)

Work the chart below in sc, carrying CC behind MC and vice versa. Every row is 56 sts. The band is built from three snowflake motifs spaced evenly across the width, each 16 sts wide x 16 rows tall, centered on a cream ground with 4-st cream margins at each side and 4 cream sts between motifs. Motifs begin at stitches 5, 21, and 37.

Snowflake Band 2 (Rows 231–266)

Rows 231–266: Repeat Rows 5–40 of Snowflake Band 1 exactly, matching the chart. (56 sc) — 36 rows total.

End Border (Rows 267–270)

Rows 267–270: With MC, ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (56 sc) — 4 rows.

After Row 270, do not turn. Fasten off, leaving a 6-in tail.

Assembly and Finishing

1. Weave in ends. Thread each tail onto your tapestry needle and run it back and forth through the wrong side of the fabric for about 2 inches, following the path of the stitches. Change direction once so the tail cannot work loose. Snip close to the fabric. Weave in all color-change ends on the wrong side, being careful not to pull the fabric.

2. Block gently. Mist the runner with water until it is lightly damp (not soaking). Lay it on a towel-covered board or blocking mats and pin the corners and edges to 14 in x 60 in, using your ruler to check. Let it dry completely. Do not press with a hot iron — heat can flatten the single crochet texture.

3. Add fringe to both short ends. Cut 112 strands of MC, each 5 in (12.5 cm) long. Holding 2 strands together, attach fringe along each short edge: insert your hook into an edge stitch, fold the 2-strand bundle in half, pull the loop through the edge, then pull the two tails through the loop and tighten. Space fringes every 2 edge stitches — 28 bundles per end.

4. Trim. Trim the fringe evenly to 2 in (5 cm) across each end.

Care: Hand wash cold, roll in a towel to remove excess water, and lay flat to dry.

Pro Tips and Variations

  • Change the palette. Swap navy for deep red or forest green for a different holiday mood, or use a soft gray for an all-season look. Keep the contrast strong so the snowflakes stay crisp.
  • Adjust the length. The center panel is the easy place to customize. Add or remove rows in multiples of 2 (each 4.5 rows equals about 1 inch) to make a shorter runner for a sideboard or a longer one for a big table. The stitch count stays 56.
  • Try a different yarn. A cotton-linen blend gives a lovely rustic texture; an acrylic-cotton blend is softer and more budget-friendly. Always re-check your gauge, since yarns behave differently.
  • Add a simple border. If you like a more finished edge, work one round of single crochet evenly around the entire runner in MC before blocking, placing 1 sc in each stitch along the long edges and 1 sc in each row-end along the short edges, with 3 sc in each corner to turn smoothly.
