Charming Heart Motif Mittens Free Pattern

Materials Needed:

• Yarn: Worsted weight in cream and red.
• Needles: US 7 (4.5mm) double-pointed needles or size needed to obtain gauge.
• Stitch markers
• Tapestry needle

Gauge:

20 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Pattern:

Cuff:

1. With cream yarn, cast on 40 stitches. Distribute sts evenly across 4 needles (10 sts per needle). Join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist. Place marker for start of round.
2. Work [k1, p1] ribbing for 1 inch.
3. Change to red yarn, knit 2 rounds.
4. Switch back to cream yarn, knit 2 additional rounds.

Body (Heart Motif):

5. Work in stockinette stitch (knit every round) for 5 rounds.
6. Begin heart chart (provided at the end), starting from the bottom of the heart. Follow the colorwork chart for both hands, ensuring hearts face opposite directions.
7. Once the heart motif is complete, continue with cream yarn for 1 inch.

Thumb Gusset:

8. On needle 1, k1, m1, k1, m1, continue knitting around. (42 sts total)
9. Knit 2 rounds.
10. Repeat the increase row every third round until there are 50 stitches.

Thumb Separation:

11. Place 10 stitches for the thumb on a stitch holder. Cast on 2 stitches over gap, continue knitting in the round. (40 sts remain)
12. Knit until hand measures 6 inches from cast on edge, or desired length.

Top Shaping:

13. Decrease as follows: [Needle 1 and 3] K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. [Needle 2 and 4] K1, ssk, knit to end. Repeat this round until 8 stitches remain.
14. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread through remaining stitches and pull tight. Secure and weave in ends.

Thumb:

15. Transfer thumb stitches to the needles. Pick up 2 stitches from hand. (12 sts)
16. Knit in the round until thumb measures 2 inches.
17. Decrease: k2tog around. (6 sts)
18. Cut yarn, leaving a tail. Thread through remaining stitches, pull tight and secure.

Finishing:

• Weave in all ends.
• Block lightly if desired.
