Crochet Soft and Stylish Puff Stitch Baby Hat Free Pattern

Materials Needed:

• Worsted weight yarn in your choice of color
• Crochet hook size H/8 (5mm)
• Yarn needle
• Scissors
• Pom-pom maker (optional)

Abbreviations:

• ch = chain
• st = stitch
• sl st = slip stitch
• sc = single crochet
• dc = double crochet
• puff stitch = (yarn over, insert hook in st, yarn over and pull up a loop) 4 times, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook

Instructions:

Ribbed Brim:

1. Ch 10.
2. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (9 sc)
3. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in back loop only in each st across. Turn.
4. Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures approximately 14 inches long when slightly stretched.
5. Join the ends of the ribbing with a sl st to form a loop. Do not fasten off.

Main Body of Hat:

6. Round 1: Ch 1, work 66 sc evenly around the edge of the ribbed band. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
7. Round 2: Ch 1, *puff stitch in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st; repeat from * around. Join with sl st to top of first puff stitch.
8. Round 3: Ch 1, *puff stitch in each ch-1 space, ch 1; repeat from * around. Join with sl st to top of first puff stitch.
9. Repeat Round 3 until the hat measures 6 inches from the bottom of the ribbing.

Shaping the Crown:

10. Round 1: Ch 1, *puff stitch in next ch-1 space, ch 1, skip to next puff stitch; repeat from * around. Join with sl st to top of first puff stitch.
11. Rounds 2-3: Repeat Round 1, continually decreasing by working into every other puff stitch until the top closes.
12. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Use the tail to weave through the last round of puff stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat.
13. Weave in all ends.

Pom-Pom:

14. Use a pom-pom maker or wrap yarn around your fingers multiple times.
15. Tie tightly in the middle and cut edges to create a pom-pom.
16. Sew the pom-pom securely to the top of the hat.
