Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight yarn, 100% cotton, approximately 400-450 yards
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • rep = repeat
  • st(s) = stitch(es)

Gauge:

15 sts and 8 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in the open mesh pattern

Stitch Pattern:

Open Mesh Stitch:
Row 1: Ch an even number of sts. Dc in the 4th ch from the hook, *ch 1, skip next ch, dc in next ch; rep from * to end, turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), *ch 1, skip next st, dc in next ch sp; rep from * to end, turn.
Rep Row 2 for pattern.

Poncho Instructions:

  1. Foundation Chain: Ch 108 (or any even number to achieve desired width).
  2. Base Row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, *ch 1, skip next ch, dc in next ch; rep from * to end, turn.
  3. Row 2: Ch 3, *ch 1, skip next st, dc in next ch sp; rep from * to end, turn.
  4. Rows 3-54: Rep Row 2 until your piece measures approximately 30 inches or desired length.
  5. Finishing: Fasten off and weave in all ends using the tapestry needle.
  6. Seaming: Fold the rectangle with the short ends facing each other. Sew along the edge using sc or sl st, leaving one-third of the length open for creating the neck opening.

Edging:

Neck and Bottom Edging:
Join yarn at any point around the neckline or bottom edge. Work in sc evenly around, join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Blocking:

Block your poncho to open up the lace pattern nicely and ensure it sits beautifully. Lightly dampen the fabric, then stretch it gently and pin it down evenly, allowing it to dry fully in the shape.
