Chunky Ribbed Knit Socks Pattern
Introduction
Welcome to your new favorite knitting project! This Chunky Ribbed Knit Socks Pattern is designed to help you create cozy, warm socks that are perfect for chilly days. The thick texture and vertical ribbing not only add style but also provide comfort for your feet. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced knitter, this pattern will guide you through each step to ensure a successful outcome.
Materials Needed
- Yarn: Super bulky yarn in cream
- Needles: US size 11 (8 mm) double-pointed needles
- Gauge: 8 stitches and 12 rows = 4 inches in rib pattern
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Cast On: Begin by using the long-tail cast on method to cast on 28 stitches. Make sure to leave a long enough tail for your cast on to avoid running out of yarn.
- Distribute Stitches: Divide the 28 stitches evenly across four double-pointed needles. You should have 7 stitches on each needle.
- Join in the Round: Carefully join the stitches in the round, ensuring that you do not twist the stitches. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity of your sock.
- Ribbing: Work in a K2, P2 ribbing pattern. This means you will knit 2 stitches, then purl 2 stitches, and repeat this pattern around the entire round. Continue this ribbing for 10 inches or until you reach your desired length for the leg of the sock.
- Begin Heel Flap: After completing the ribbing, you will start the heel flap. Work 14 stitches in K2, P2 ribbing back and forth (this means you will knit one row, then purl the next) for 2 inches. This will create a sturdy heel flap.
- Turn Heel: To shape the heel, you will work short rows. This involves knitting a certain number of stitches, then turning your work and purling back. Follow these steps:
- Row 1: Knit 7 stitches, then turn your work.
- Row 2: Purl 3 stitches, then turn your work.
- Row 3: Knit to the last stitch before the gap, knit 1, turn your work.
- Row 4: Purl to the last stitch before the gap, purl 1, turn your work.
- Repeat these short rows until you have 14 stitches on your needle.
- Pick Up Stitches: Once the heel is turned, pick up stitches along the sides of the heel flap. You should pick up a total of 14 stitches on each side, plus the 14 stitches from the heel, to resume knitting in the round.
- Resume Knitting: Continue knitting in the round, maintaining the K2, P2 rib pattern until the foot measures 2 inches less than your desired length. Make sure to try on the sock as you go to ensure a good fit.
- Shape Toe: To shape the toe, you will decrease stitches. Decrease 4 stitches every other round until you have 8 stitches remaining. To decrease, knit 2 together (K2tog) at the beginning and end of the round.
- Graft Toe: Once you have 8 stitches left, use the Kitchener stitch to graft the toe closed. This will give you a seamless finish. If you are unfamiliar with the Kitchener stitch, there are many tutorials available online to guide you through this technique.
- Weave in Ends: Finally, use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends. Make sure to secure your yarn well to prevent unraveling.
Congratulations! You have successfully knitted your very own chunky ribbed socks. Enjoy wearing them or gifting them to someone special!
