Approximately 12 stitches and 14 rows equal 4 inches in half double crochet (hdc).
Abbreviations
- ch - chain
- sc - single crochet
- hdc - half double crochet
- st(s) - stitch(es)
- sl st - slip stitch
Instructions
- Foundation Row: Start by making a slip knot and chaining 21 stitches. This will form the width of your scarf.
- Row 1: Starting in the second chain from the hook, make 1 single crochet (sc) in each chain across (20 sc). Turn your work.
- Row 2: Chain 2 (counts as first hdc), then make 1 hdc in the same stitch. *Skip the next stitch and make 2 hdc in the following stitch.* Repeat from * to * across the row. You should end with 1 hdc in the last stitch (20 stitches total). Turn your work.
- Row 3: Chain 1, then make 1 sc in each hdc across. Turn your work.
- Row 4: Chain 2, then repeat Row 2.
- Row 5: Chain 1, then repeat Row 3.
- Repeat Rows 2 through 5 until your scarf measures approximately 60 inches (or desired length). Make sure to finish on a Row 3.
- Edging: For a neat finish, you can add an edging. Chain 1, and then make 1 sc in each stitch across the entire scarf. Sl st to the first sc to join.
- Finishing: Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and pull it through the last stitch to secure it. Use the tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.
