Striped Baby Beanie with Pom Pom

This beginner-friendly pattern will guide you through creating a lovely striped beanie for babies. It features a cozy fit, vibrant stripes, and a cute pom pom topper, making it a perfect project and delightful gift.

Materials

  • Yarn: Soft, worsted weight yarn in three colors (Light Gray, Dark Gray, Orange)
  • Needles: US Size 8 (5 mm) circular needles (16” length) and double-pointed needles
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • Pom Pom maker (optional)

Gauge

18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Instructions

  1. Cast On: Using the MC (Light Gray), CO 80 stitches. Make sure to join in the round without twisting the stitches. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
  2. Ribbing: Round 1-6: *K2, P2*; repeat from * to * around. This will create a snug and stretchy brim for the hat.
  3. Body of Hat:
    • Switch to stockinette stitch for the main part of the hat. Round 7: K all stitches.
    • Continue working in stockinette (knitting every round) until the beanie measures 5 inches from the cast-on edge.
  4. Striping:
    • Round 8: Change to CC (Dark Gray). K all stitches.
    • Round 9: Change to CC (Orange). K all stitches.
    • Round 10: Change back to MC (Light Gray). K all stitches.
    • Repeat these 3 rounds (gray, orange, light gray) until the hat measures 7.5 inches from the cast-on edge.
  5. Crown Decrease:
    • Round 1: K8, K2tog; repeat from * to * around (72 sts).
    • Round 2: K all stitches.
    • Round 3: K7, K2tog; repeat from * to * around (64 sts).
    • Round 4: K all stitches.
    • Round 5: K6, K2tog; repeat from * to * around (56 sts).
    • Round 6: K all stitches.
    • Round 7: K5, K2tog; repeat from * to * around (48 sts).
    • Round 8: K all stitches.
    • Round 9: K4, K2tog; repeat from * to * around (40 sts).
    • Round 10: K all stitches.
    • Round 11: K3, K2tog; repeat from * to * around (32 sts).
    • Round 12: K all stitches.
    • Round 13: K2, K2tog; repeat from * to * around (24 sts).
    • Round 14: K all stitches.
    • Round 15: K1, K2tog; repeat from * to * around (16 sts).
    • Round 16: K all stitches.
    • Round 17: K2tog around (8 sts).
  6. Bind Off: Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the yarn through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the hat. Weave in all loose ends.
  7. Pom Pom: Using a pom pom maker or your fingers, create a fluffy pom pom with the MC yarn. Attach it to the top of the hat using the yarn tail.
